Welcome to Arbor
Day
Variety of events planned
This year, Nebraska City residents and visitors will celebrate
the 135th annual Arbor Day April 27-29.
“We're really excited about all the new things that will be offered
this year for Arbor Day, not only for visitors to our town, but
also for local folks looking for a good time,” said Arbor Day
Committee co-chair Tammy Partsch. “As a community, we should be
so proud of our heritage as the Home of Arbor Day. It's a pleasure
for the committee to serve.”
Festivities begin Friday, April 27. A Community Tree Planting
will take place in Wildwood Park at 4 p.m. The tree planting is
in cooperation with the National Arbor Day Foundation and the
Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. “The Statewide Arboretum is going
to announce a new project called ReTree Nebraska that day, so
it promises be a great event,” Partsch said.
Programs for local school children will be held during the day,
and free trees will be given to every student.
On Saturday morning, a 5K run/walk will take participants around
the grounds of Arbor Lodge State Historical Park, and a fun-filled
parade that afternoon will go through downtown Nebraska City.
Saturday evening, a reception and community barbecue will be held
at Wildwood Park.
On Sunday, a Family Fun Festival will be held at Wildwood Park,
along with a performance by the Southeast Nebraska Community Band
that afternoon at the historic Morton Orchard barns.
Area museums and attractions will be open all weekend, including
the Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventure and Apple House, the Missouri
River Basin Lewis and Clark Interpretive Trail and Visitor Center,
Arbor Trails Winery, Kimmel Orchard and Vineyard, River Country
Nature Center and the Mayhew Cabin, formerly known as John Brown's
Cave. Also, don't miss a chance to see a new and improved Arbor
Lodge State Historical Park, thanks to a recent Save America's
Treasures grant.
Throughout the weekend, area businesses and organizations will
be participating in the celebration with craft shows, a plant
sale, fly-in breakfast at the local airport and special sales.
Parade applications and 5K registrations, along with all of the
Arbor Day details, may be found on the city's website at www.NebraskaCity.com.
