Weekend full of fun for all
Nebraska City’s Arbor Day Celebration is April 27-29

 

• Museums that will be open for tours Saturday and Sunday and not included elsewhere in this issue are River Country Nature Center, 12-4 p.m.; Civil War Museum in GAR Hall, 12-4 p.m.; Old Freighters Museum, 1-4 p.m. and Nelson House, 1-4 p.m. Farmers Bank & Trust will be open for tours Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. It was constructed in 1886.

Friday events include the Arbor Day Children’s Program for invited classes and the Community Tree Planting at Wildwood Park, 4 p.m.
Lourdes’ high school musical, Fiddler on the Roof is also being performed over the weekend, with performances on Friday, 7 p.m., Saturday, 8 p.m. and Sunday, 2 p.m. at the school. Cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children.

On Saturday, the Arbor Day 5K begins with registration 7:45-8:20 a.m. at Central Avenue and Steinhart Park Road. Cost is $22. Visit www.Nebraska city.com for registration information.

Tree City Garden Club Plant Sale, Wildwood Center, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Car show at Nebraska Tire, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Jaycees Craft show, lower level Memorial Building, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Flea market, Finders Keepers Antique Mall, Highway 2 near I-29, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (also on Sunday).
Francis Moul book signing, Book Clinic, 10 a.m. to noon.
Craft show, Heartland Craft Mall, Factory Stores of America, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday 12-6 p.m.
The parade is from 1-2:30 p.m. downtown, 16th Street to 6th Street.
Commemorative tree plantings are at 3 p.m. at Arbor Lodge State Historical Park.
Honoree and Tree Planter’s Reception, Wildwood Park Victorian Gardens, 4 p.m.
Arbor Day Barbecue and live music, 6 p.m., Wildwood Park.
Live entertainment is offered at Avenue Grill as a fundraiser for Cider House Theatre, 8 p.m.

Sunday kicks off with the Jaycee Fly-In and Pancake Feed at the airport, 7-11 a.m.
Family Fun Festival is 12-4 p.m. at Wildwood Historic Home.
Southeast Community Band concert will be 2-3 p.m. at Morton Historic Barns at Arbor Day Farm.


Various attractions open

Mayhew Cabin and Historical Village
Underground Railroad stop features replica of cave in which runaway slaves were hidden

Mayhew Cabin and Historical Village will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The recently renovated cabin was a stop along the Underground Railroad and features a replica of the cave in which runaway slaves could hide under the house. The historic village features a variety of buildings including a Victorian home, school house and one of the first African American churches this side of the Missouri.

MRB Lewis & Clark Center
Earth lodge, trails, river overlook add to center’s attractions

The Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark Center is open Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, 12 p.m to 4 p.m. Visitors can enjoy hands-on exhibits about the Lewis & Clark expedition and the discoveries of flora and fauna made during the journey. The Center pays tribute to the role of Native Americans in the expedition and features an authentic earth lodge. Visitors can also enjoy a walk down to a scenic river overlook.


Adult Comedy Show
The Cider House Theatre will present an Adult Comedy Show Saturday, April 28 at Avenue Grill. Doors open at 7 p.m. The evening will feature Darrin Meyer and Paul Wiese, two nationally touring comics. Tickets are $15 for singles and $20 for couples. Seating is limited. Call 873-3229 for reservations.

Parade features variety of entries
Held on Central Avenue from 16th Street to 6th Street
The annual parade will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. The parade will begin at 16th Street and continue east on Central Avenue to 6th Street.

Kimmel Orchard
Wine tastings and trail walks featured

Orchard manager Eric Olson said Kimmel Orchard will host a variety of activities again this year.
He said wine tastings will be featured, and visitors will be invited to sample an array of foods, including jams, jellies and honeys. Olson also invites visitors to walk the trails.
Kimmel Orchard’s hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts
Gallery features Gawel photos

The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts will be open Saturday, April 28 from noon - 4 pm. Photographs by Larry Gawel will be featured in the gallery. Visitors are also welcome to come meet the artists in residence and tour their studios.
