PATRIOTISM

Auburn, located in the southeastern corner
of Nebraska and the county seat of Nemaha County, is appropriately
referred to as "The Patriot City of the Heartland."
On each patriotic holiday during the year, Legion Park, located
on Highway 75 north of downtown Auburn, offers a breath-taking
display of more than 830 American flags. Each white flag pole
bears the name of a war veteran from the area and his war of service.
All military conflicts are represented, from the Civil War to
the recent Gulf War. This moving patriot tradition continues to
expand, with additional flags added each year by families of veterans
of war. These are the actual flags presented to the families by
the government.
Flags are put out early in the morning and taken down again before
dark by town residents who 'just show up' to participate in this
local tradition. Watching the growing crowd of people who arrive
to take on this patriotic burden is as heart-warming as viewing
the flags flying in unison.
There is no shortage of patriotic volunteers in this Patriot City
of the Heartland.
In addition to 'The Avenue of Flags,' each business that lines
the downtown area displays the Stars and Stripes, and the residential
areas of this Midwestern town are a splash of red, white and blue.
In several business offices in town, a beautiful rendition of
The Avenue of Flags is displayed, painted by local artist Nancy
Moran, nationally known for her Ducks Unlimited paintings.
