Arbor Day

Just like the area’s
beautiful trees, Nebraska City’s Arbor Day Celebration has
grown and expanded since the Legislature made it a legal holiday
in 1885.
J. Sterling Morton, serving as Secretary
of Agriculture, founded the holiday, and introduced a resolution
calling for a tree planting day to be known as Arbor Day in 1872.
Morton and his wife, Caroline, had settled in Nebraska City
in 1855 and built a lovely home, which grew to a 52-room, neo-colonial
mansion and serves as the heartbeat of Arbor Lodge State Park.
Arbor Day Celebration starts the last Friday of April
and promises visitors and residents a variety of activities that center
around tree planting and education.
Arbor Lodge also offers its traditional
Children’s Program. Students from every elementary school
in Otoe County attend the afternoon event, which features entertainment
for the youth and the presentation of a seedling to each child
attending.
The Brown Bag series run from the Monday to Thursday preceding Arbor Day weekend,
area speakers give one-hour presentations relating to the celebration.
Each program begins at noon and people attending are encouraged
to bring a brown bag lunch.
