Cemeteries

The first
known cemetery in Nebraska City was located in the area of First
Avenue and 11th Street prior to 1854. Wyuka Cemetery was founded
on 10 acres that belonged to Allen B. Mayhew and Barbara Kagi Mayhew
in 1855. The Wyuka Cemetery Board was established in 1934 to manage
the property. John W. Clements was the first person buried at Wyuka.
His grave is marked by a white marble, upright slab on a lot adjoining
north that of the J. Sterling Morton family.
