Pioneer softball takes one win at Seward tourney

Nebraska City picked up a win in three games at the Seward softball tournament Saturday, beating South Sioux City, but falling to Aurora and Fairbury.

The Pioneers were scheduled to return to action Tuesday night at home against Auburn before traveling to play at Bellevue East at 5 p.m. on Thursday. The team will be in action again at home Saturday against Plattsmouth and Gretna with the first game to begin at 9 a.m.

Nebraska City 12, South Sioux 3
Kailey Mangum threw a complete game six-hitter and struck out two to lead Nebraska City past South Sioux City.

Offensively, Nebraska City struck for six runs in he second inning and six more in the third frame on the way to victory.
South Sioux picked up all three of its runs in the third frame.

Jessica Hart had two hits, one of them being a double, to lead the Pioneer offense. Other hits were by Anna Hotsenpillar, a double, and Jeri Nuss, Mangum, and Becky Volkmer, all singles.

Aurora 5, Nebraska City 0
Aurora pitched a three-hit shut out and struck out six Pioneer batters on the way to victory.
Kailey Mangum, Becky Volkmer and Kayelynn Tyson had the only hits for the Pioneer offense, all singles.

Aurora struck for four of its five runs in the third inning and added the final run in the fourth frame.

Mangum pitched the loss for Nebraska City.She allowed seven hits and struck out four.

Fairbury 7, Nebraska City 5
Eight hits and five runs of offense proved insufficient as the Pioneers lost to Fairbury.
JeriNuss, Anna Hotsenpillar and Brea Smith all had two singles each and Kailey Mangum and Amanda Sasse also had one single in the set back.

Nebraska City scored a run in the second inning, three in the fourth and one in the fifth to claim a 5-4 lead, but Fairbury scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and hung on for the victory.
Mangum pitched the loss despite striking out eight.
