In a game of cards, the trump card takes the trick or wins the points.

Nebraska City’s volleyball team played against the Cardinals of Crete and definitely needed to pull off a trick to record a five-game win, 22-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-23, and 17-15, during district tourney action at Lincoln Southwest on Tuesday.

Crete took control of game one mid-way through, built a 24-17 lead, and, although the Pioneers got a side-out and went on a short rally, the Cardinals were able to close out.

Game two saw the Cards leading at 18-13 before the Pioneers rallied to take a pair of one point leads, but Crete made the points in crunch time and led by two games.

Nebraska City again trailed 18-13 in game three, before tying the game at 21-21.

Crete took a 23-21 lead, fended off a Pioneer game point at 24-23, but then gave up two points as the Pioneers stayed alive.

Nebraska City held leads in games four and five, but was forced to score points under pressure to secure two game wins for a season-extending match victory.

“It was a slow start, but an amazing finish,” Coach Marla Larsen said of the Pioneers’ win. “I am so very proud of the play of every single one of these girls.

“They worked so hard and, most importantly, they did it together,” Larsen said.

Calli Earhart, who served as the setter earlier this year, returned to the position to post a 52-assist performance on 195-of-198 set attempts.

“She did a wonderful job of leading the team,” Coach Larsen said.

Earhart also had nine digs, three ace serves and one block.

Justine DeBuhr had the kills lead with 17 and also added 17 digs, a block and a service ace.

Joreen Nemec had 12 kills, 32 digs, a block and two service aces, while Cierra Pierce had 11 kills and three digs.

Maegan Hathaway had six kills, a service ace, two digs and five ace blocks.

Rachel Gogan had eight kills and four ace blocks while Natalie Jones had 16 digs and Jenna Peterson had three ace serves, 26 digs and a kill.

Stevie Pierce also had one kill.

“Maegan Hathaway dominated at the net and Jenna Peterson really stepped up in the back row,” Coach Larsen said.

Nebraska City was scheduled to return to action Thursday night for semifinal action of the district tournament at LincolnSouthwest.

ThePioneers were to play No. 2 Beatrice, who drew a first round bye.

Top seeded LincolnPius X, who also drew a first round bye, was to face Norris in the other semifinal match. Norris beat Waverly in first round action on Tuesday.
