NC tennis team scores three at state meet

Members of theNebraska City tennis team recorded three wins and 10 team points during action at the Class B state tennis meet at Lincoln last Thursday.

Kevin Rademacher, No. 1 singles, beat Adams Central, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round before falling to No. 8 seed Drew Heckman of Omaha Brownell-Talbot, 6-2, 6-1.

Ricky Sutliff faced a rated player in his first match of the tourney at No. 2 singles, falling by sores of 6-1, 6-1 to No. 9 Joseph Hoffman of Mount Michael Benedictine.

David Wheeler and Navid Rahmany teamed for a win over South Sioux City, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) before falling to No. 1 and undefeated Lincoln Pius X, 6-0, 6-0.

Brady Weddle and John Russell, No. 2, scored a win over South Sioux City, 6-3, 6-3, then dropped a match to No. 1 seed Beatrice, 6-4, 6-1.

Looking at the team race, Nebraska City finished in a tie for 14th place with 10 points after the first day of play.

“I was very pleased with our effort and excited to see the team rewarded with some wins for their work this year that increased their technical skills and tactical skills for match play, “ Coach Dave Saulsberry said.

Class B individual state champions in singles were Michael Sambol of Omaha Skutt Catholic at No. 1, and Jordan Barrett of Adams Central at No. 2.

Doubles champions were Kyle Conzemius and Garrett Sutton of Pius X at No. 1, and  Rafael Pennella and Levi Gipson of Lincoln Christian at No. 2.
Pius X won the team championship with a score of 40.5.
