Dominant pitching and a steady supply of offense were
key as the Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca softball team opened the season with wins
Thursday and Saturday.
The Rockets shut out Omaha Roncalli-Ft. Calhoun in
the opening game of the season at home on Thursday, then added wins over
Wymore Southern and Cass County Central in home triangular action Saturday.
S-D-A was scheduled to return to action at Yutan
Tuesday before hosting Conestoga on Thursday. Junior varsity action will
start at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6:30 p.m.
S-D-A will be in action Saturday at the Auburn
tourney with the first game set to be played at 9 a.m. Match up information
had yet to be announced prior to press time Tuesday.
S-D-A 7, Roncalli 0
The first Roncalli batter of the game reached base on
an error and made it to third base, but that about summed up the offensive
effort for the visitors.
Natalie Hauschild found her groove on the mound on
the way to a 15-strikeout performance. She faced 22 batters overall and did
not allow a hit.
Offensively, the Rockets posted three runs in the
third inning, but also had one run in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth
frames.
Traci Bassinger and Louise Wellensiek both had
multiple hits on the game. Bassinger hit 3-for-3, all of them doubles, and
Wellensiek had two hits, one of which was a double.
Shelby Diers, Kaci Beckmann, Shayna Aksamit,
and
Madison Cameron each
had one hit.
S-D-A 8, Southern 0
Thursday’s pattern continued Saturday as the
Rockets won a shut-out decision over Wymore Southern.
The offense scored two in the first inning and backed
that up with four in the third frame and one run in the fourth and fifth
frames.
Traci Bassinger and Louise Wellensiek each had two
hits, including a double, and Natalie Hauschild had two hits as well.
Alexa Krieger had a double and Kaci Beckmann and
Madison Cameron had singles.
Hauschild was again dominant in the pitching circle
with 13 strikeouts in a one hit and one walk performance.
S-D-A 2, Cass County 1
Missed opportunities made for a close game as the
Rockets nipped Cass County Central, a team comprised of players from
Louisville and Weeping Water.
S-D-A scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning
and Cass County scored one in the top of the seventh inning.
A few key hits could have blown the game open. The
Rockets left runners in scoring position in the first, second, fourth and
fifth innings. By contrast, Cass County left just one runner in scoring
position for the game.
Natalie Hauschild picked up the win in the pitching
circle. She allowed one unearned run and fanned 11 batters.
Offensive leaders included Traci Bassinger, Madison
Cameron and Shayna Aksamit, each with two hits. Aksamit’s hits
included a double. Hauschild had a triple. Alexa Krieger and Louise
Wellensiek had one hit each.
