Fortune smiles onEast Mills in win

Three fumbles on punt returns didn’t hurt East
Mills in a 56-36 win over Hamburg in the season finale Friday night.
East Mills covered all three fumbles, thus preventing
turnovers, and, offensively, struck for 22 points in the first quarter to
provide most of the final margin.
An 11-yard run and a two-point pass provided the
first points in a three touchdown scoring spree by East Mills in the first
quarter.
Other scores were posted on a 38-yard pass and a
60-yard run.
Hamburg fought back and drew within one score.
Klinton Hansen scored on a five-yard run in the late
first quarter and Kaleb Kahue caught a 35-yard pass from Doug Raymond to
open the second quarter.
A two-point run by Jacob Raymond had the score at
22-14.
A 24-yard scoring pass and two-point pass put the
lead back to 30-14 for East Mills, but a 12-yard Doug Raymond run in the
third quarter made the score 30-20.
A 50-yard scoring pass and a 4-yard touchdown run by
East Mills had the score at 44-20.
The two teams traded scores from there with Hamburg
posting a touchdown on a 2-yard run by Doug Raymond and a 34-yard scoring
pass from Raymond to Joel DeLong.
East Mills had a score on a 25-yard run and added a
four-yard scoring run.
In terms of total stats, Hamburg finished the game
with 103 passing yards and two touchdowns, while East Mills had 147 yards
and three scores through the air.
Hamburg rushed for 171 yards on 39 attempts and had
three touchdowns, while East Mills rushed for five scores and 293 yards.
Those numbers put the total yardage for Hamburg at
274, compared with 440 by East Mills.
Doug Raymond was the individual rushing leader for
the Wildcats with 83 yards, while Hansen had 53 and Kahue had 35.
Kahue was the receptions leader with four catches for
56 yards and DeLong was second with 34 yards.
DeLong returned six kickoffs for 93 yards and a long
of 23. Hansen had three returns for 81 yards with a long of 41.
Kahue led the defense with 15 total tackles, 10 of
them being solos.
Deven Holman had nine, while Matt Barrett and Hansen
had eight each.
Jacob Raymond and Colin Nahkunst had a fumble
recovery and an interception respectively.
With the loss, the Hamburg football team wrapped up
the season at 3-6.
Stanton, East Mills, Sidney and Villisca qualified
for the state playoffs from the Wildcats’ district.
Stanton has the best record of the group at 9-0,
while East Mills is 7-2.
Hamburg owns a win over Villisca, but Villisca made
the playoffs by virtue of its better district record at 4-3.
Sidney has the same district record as the Wildcats,
but the Cowboys own the head-to-head tiebreaker over Hamburg.
